Project Gdańsk, Poland

Gdańsk container terminal

Capacity doubled on time

Since 2016, the international port of Gdańsk, Poland, welcomes a new generation of huge container carriers in deepwater facilities with doubled handling capacity. Designed and built under tight deadlines by BESIX and NDI.

We took on a number of challenges, with important implications on the design. The flexible collaboration with Industria, our local design subcontractor, enriched our work experience in terms of designing structure, communicating and problem-solving.

Polish winter

The new T2 terminal includes a 656 m mooring quay with a draft of 17 m. BESIX and NDI also designed, built and equipped its approximately 25 hectares of platforms, storage depots, technical installations and workshops. To be operational within the given deadlines required establishing and sticking to a meticulous schedule which took account of the complex design process, soil pre-remediation, but also the harsh Polish winter.

Baltic giants

In 2016 Gdańsk's international port 2016 doubled its deepwater container handling capacity to 3 million TEU ('twenty-foot equivalent', the unit used to measure container size) to make it today's largest container terminal in the Baltic Sea. This follows the commissioning of the new T2 terminal, designed and built by BESIX and NDI, and the extension of the existing terminal T1 facilities.

Non-stop activity

In a second phase, BESIX and NDI extended the facilities of the existing T1 terminal, including a new underground infrastructure, a three-storey office building and a new workshop. The job was completed in a record 12 months, without interrupting operations in the port and the existing warehouse area.
